Making the decision to start a career in the nail industry can be such an exciting but daunting thought. Becoming a nail technician is not just a for a job for the rest of your life but a vocation that can offer an abundance of possibilities.

It really is a fantastic career choice but when starting out there are a lot of things to take into consideration. Common questions are: What courses can I do? Which courses do I start with? Where can I train? What are the progression routes? Are the courses accredited? 

Here’s what you need to know about making it in the nail industry…

Research local training providers
Before making any decisions, do your research on the training that’s available in your area. For example, local colleges, private training academies and even product suppliers all have educators who run courses from their facilities. Many of the big nail companies often have their own educators, too. Some educators may not be in your area but it could be worth travelling to someone for a great start in your education.

Ask other students for advice
It’s worth checking out reviews on the company’s website and social media channels, as well as speaking to previous students to get their feedback on the course.

Quiz the educators
Find out as much as you can about the training provider and your educator’s background because they can help you get on the right path to the type of nail tech you want to be. Your educator will always be willing to help you with a progression route that suits you as an individual and will support you throughout your journey to achieving your goals. 

Find you specialism
Once you’ve attended your first nail course there are endless possibilities for progression. Find an area you’re passionate about and then attend more courses to improve your skills and knowledge in this area. For example, maybe you want to learn more skills in acrylic, using coloured acrylic and encapsulation, or like fine art painting or fancy trying 3D gel designs?

And remember… 
You want to start off your career with a good education and the right knowledge and skills. Due to the ever evolving nail industry, there’s always something new and exciting to learn about. Keep pushing yourself to achieve new skills.
