New eco cosmetic standard covers whole product lifecycle
US not-for-profit environmental organisation Green Seal has developed the first standard for cosmetic products that addresses the whole product lifecycle, aswell as product performance. The GS-50 standard covers products intended to be left on the body and hair including skincare for face and body, nail polish, and make-up. To achieve certification, manufacturers need to satisfy performance, health and environmental, social responsibility, packaging and labeling requirements, as well as providing definitions for common claims such as 'natural' and 'organic'. Certification allows manufacturers to feature the Green Seal logo. Dr Arthur Weissman, president and chief executive of Green Seal, said: 'The personal care and cosmetics category has been the focus of much consumer concern in relation to the environmental and health impacts of ingredients and manufacturing processes used. Green Seal has developed standards that address these concerns and make it possible for consumers to identify those products that have been independently certified to have less impact.'
