Record growth for online beauty sales
Online health and beauty sales have experienced a year-on-year increase of 53%, from October 2010 to October 2011. This is the highest ever-recorded growth for this sector, according to the latest figures from IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index. The figures also revealed that beauty sales online increased 44% during the month of October 2011. In comparison, online clothing sales only increased 11%, which could be related to shoppers being put off updating their wardrobes for the winter months as a result of the high October temperatures. The travel sector also suffered with sales declining by 17%, as consumer tightened their belts during the economic downturn. The report suggests that shoppers are avoiding expensive high-ticket items, such as holidays and televisions, but they are happy to treat themselves with lower ticket goods in the beauty sector. However, this strong growth in online beauty sales could impact the amount of consumer spend in beauty salons and spas. Figures also released today from the Office of National Statistics report that total online retail sales in are up 5.4% year-on-year from October 2010 to October 2011.
