Skin cancer awareness roadshow launches following new research
Two thirds (64%) of people surveyed by the Mole & Sun Advice Roadshow said they never check their skin for signs of cancer. The survey organised by the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) and supported by skincare brand La Roche-Posay, also revealed that 92% of those asked said they had experienced sunburn, with many saying they had been burnt multiple times. As a result of the survey, the 2012 Mole & Sun Advice Roadshow, organised by BAD and La Roche Posay, will launch as the UK's biggest skin cancer awareness tour to date. This follows four pilot events held in 2011. The roadshow will tour eight major national events across the UK where thousands of people will receive mole and sun-advice from expert dermatologists and nurses. One-to-one mole checks will be provided free of charge and the roadshow will give people the chance to better understand their skin type and how it copes with the sun. The survey showed that people over estimate how well adapted their skin is to UV exposure. 94% of those who said that their 'skin burns minimally but always tans' revealed they had been sunburnt at least once, with 31% recalling having been burnt more than ten times. Dr Stephen Jones, president of the British Association of Dermatologists, said: 'While protecting your skin from being sun damaged in the first place is of course the best way to reduce you risk of skin cancer, regrettably many people will have got sunburnt at some point in their lives. Therefore, educating the public on how to check their skin is a priority - so that people know what to look out for if the prevention message comes too late.' The Mole and Sun Advice Roadshow will be attending the following events: Windsor Horse Show - May 9-13 Hertfordshire County Show - June 2-3 Isle of Wight Festival - June 22-24 Royal International Air Tattoo, Gloucestershire - July 7-8 Latitude Festival, Suffolk - July 12-15 CLA Game Fair, Grantham - July 20-22 WOMAD Festival, Wiltshire - July 27-29 Edinburgh Fringe Festival - one weekend either August 11-12 or 18-19
