Under-18 sunbed ban comes into force in Northern Ireland
A ban on the use of sunbeds by clients under the age of 18 came into force in Northern Ireland today. Salons found to be allowing under-18s to use sunbed equipment from today (May 1) onwards may face prosecution. Local councils will be responsible for enforcing the new legislation, which also states that anyone over 18 must be provided with information on the health risks associated with sunbeds before being allowed to use one. All salons offering sunbed sessions must also be supervised. Northern Ireland is the last country in the UK to enforce the ban. Similar legislation came into force in England and Wales in April 2011, while in Scotland, under-18s have been banned from using sunbeds since 2008.
