FDA approves dermal filler for treatment of acne scars

The Food and Drug Administration in USA has approved a dermal filler for use in acne scarring treatments. Bellafill, which is developed by manufacturer Suneva Medical and called Artefill in the UK, has been cleared for treating the cheek area in clients over the age of 21.

The approval by the FDA was based on a clinical study that tested Bellafill’s effects on acne scarring compared to placebo saline injections. Bellafill was found to have improved the appearance of acne scars by two points on an approved, four-point scale over six months by 64% of respondents, compared to 33% of respondents in the placebo group.

Chief executive of Suneva Medical, Nicholas Teti Jr said, “These types of acne scars affect millions of people and can have a profoundly negative impact on their self-esteem and self-confidence.”
