Media management
Lopo Champalimaud, co-founder and chief executive of online beauty bookings platform Wahanda, gives us the lowdown on his presentation at the 2015 Professional Spa & Wellness Convention
What made you interested in joining the social media panel at the convention?
Communication has changed. It’s crucial to make the most of this and be quick to learn how to leverage new methods of communication and invent great ways to use it. Relative to other industries, the spa and salon market is still behind in effectively using social media to grow our business.
What do you plan to cover in your presentation?
I will be sharing best practice from other industries and some of what we learned in this area at Wahanda.
What would you like the audience to take away from this session?
Tools with which to assess their social media strategy and whether it’s working for them. We live in a world where customers fast forward adverts and would rather receive a text message than a phone call. Spas and salons have to understand this, their social media strategy has to be able to cut through the noise.
How important is it today for spas and salons to be adept as social media?
Social media is a key part of engaging and communicating with your clients and potential new customers. But if you can't do it well, don't do it.
Have you noticed any recent changes in how media savvy spas are?
We have noticed a huge increase in conversation and interaction with our venues on social media. Spas and salons are utilising it more and it’s great for us because we can let our audience know where they can “get the look” or help them with any queries they might have. Visual [social] media such as Instagram also acts as a great lookbook for spas and stylists.
"Social media is a key part of engaging and communicating with your clients. But if you can't do it well, don't do it"
What would be your four key social media tips to spas?
- Ask yourself what the purpose of your business is
- Ask yourself why someone should be listening to you
- Ask yourself what the voice and messaging you want to deliver is
- Ask yourself how to engage consistently with your clients
