PB Q&A: Sandra McClumpha, Founder of Fake Bake

In 2001, Sandra McClumpha introduced Fake Bake to the UK and built the company initially from her bedroom. The success of the brand has led to the production of over 35 retail and professional self-tan products ranging from oil free moisturisers to top of the range spray tan liquids.

PB: What is your most popular product and what do you think makes it popular?

SM: The current best seller is our Flawless Self-Tan Liquid which is a favourite with celebrities and a regular in the columns of the top magazines.

The key success of this product is down to a combination of qualities including Flawless’ ability to deliver a beautiful, golden tan which is easy to apply with a fast drying and pleasant tropical scent.

PB: What makes your products special over the competition?

SM: The Fake Bake self-tanning range features naturally derived ingredients with unique performance enhancers and all products are free from artificial preservatives and parabens.

The products are pleasantly fragranced and contain a unique triple tan formula, DHA, Erythulose & DMI, which when combined develop the most natural looking, holiday tan which lasts longer and is less prone to streaking.

Fake Bake also offer a number of products to suit all skin tones and types which contain a variety of skin care benefits including anti-ageing, anti-cellulite and anti-oxidants.

PB: How cost effective are your products when introducing them into a salon?

SM: All Fake Bake retail products have a trade price that is almost half their retail value allowing the potential for significant return. When stocking these products in a salon, they receive maximum support from the in-store marketing materials provided by Fake Bake as well as the consistent coverage and recommendations in the press.

The spray tan liquids also provide a cost effective solution to any salon due to the quantity of applications within each bottle.  One bottle, of any of the five available Fake Bake liquids, should allow for up to 14 spray tan applications ensuring generous return.

Beyond Bronze spray tan liquid is perfect for salons on a budget, wishing to implement promotions or offer a cheaper alternative for their clients. The solution is available in two sizes with the largest of the two allowing up to 56 spray tans for approximately £1.60 per application.

PB: Do you provide any extra services for professionals who use your products in their salons?

SM: Fake Bake are always on hand to ensure you are making the most of your business with our customer services team, expert trainers and mobile therapist specialists. We also have three training schools around the UK which offer courses in both self-tan and spray tan applications.

We have recently introduced our Next Level Training course which looks to help you improve and make the most of your business with in-depth product training, expert tuition, hints and tips and more.

For mobile therapist Fake Bake at Home is a strong supportive structure which is set in place to ensure that though you work for yourself, you are not alone.

PB: Why should salon owners visit your stand at the show?

SM: The Fake Bake team will be on hand to provide expert advice on all our new and existing products, start up packages and how you can make the most from your Fake Bake business.

PB: Are you having anything new on your stand at the show?

SM: We will be introducing new and exciting products to this year’s show to continue being one of the most innovative tanning brands on the market.

PB: Will you be having any special offers exclusive to the show?

SM: Our exclusive offers at the London show will include VAT free on all retail products, assorted spray tan liquid offers and many more. Additional offers will be revealed at the show.

PB: Any other plans for the show?

SM: Alongside our amazing offers and new products, the show will see us launch the opportunity of a lifetime which will lead to one lucky tan enthusiast landing his dream career with our award-winning brand. For more information on this amazing competition visit our stand and check our Facebook and Twitter.

PB: What tips would you give salon owners looking to introduce a new line into their salon?

SM: When introducing new lines into your salon it is vital to ensure your staff have gained a substantial amount of knowledge and experience of the products. Through the relevant training employees will be aware of the key selling points of the products which will in turn lead to an increase in sales.
