How to know when to expand your business: March highlights

Expanding your business is a challenging time, whether you’re growing from a small home salon to a clinic or redesigning your spa to meet client needs. This month we talk to those in the midst of change and ask them why it was the right time to expand their business. We also analyse what a microbead ban could mean for the UK beauty industry, with insight from industry leaders.

A few of the highlights include:

Outside edge
The new Thermal Village was designed to grow Galgorm Resort & Spa’s international and male client bases, while maximising its natural setting. The Northern Ireland spa has more than doubled in size – from 30,000sq ft to a vast 75,000sq ft – as well adding new features including a glass-fronted outdoor sauna, outdoor steam room and series of hot tubs. We uncover what this expansion means for the business.

Home comforts
This month we spoke to facialist Teresa Tarmey about why the time was right to fly the nest and expand from a home salon to her first London clinic in Notting Hill. The clinic is on the affluent Needham Road but the interior has been designed on the look of her home salon. Tarmey talks us through her expansion decisions, design choices and more.

The big issue: should the UK ban microbeads?
Australia became the latest country to make its move in the great microbead debate, by issuing a phase-out of products containing the tiny spherical particles. This news came hot on the heels of the US ban that saw President Barack Obama sign into law the Microbead-Free Waters Act, prohibiting the manufacture of rinse-off cosmetics containing the beads. As global pressure grows to eliminate the use of microbeads in beauty products, we investigate what this means for the UK market.

The March issue has been mailed to subscribers. A digital version can be bought online for £1.49 – or just £5 for 12 issues. The print edition is just £37 for an annual 12-issue subscription. Make sure you’re always the first to read the news and trends by subscribing online.
