Skin cycling and glazed donut nails among top 2023 TikTok beauty trends

TikTok is a platform known for its quick turnover, with new trends emerging exponentially and dying out as fast as they arrive, many trends that emerge on the platform are seen as ‘micro-trends’ for their short lifespan.

New research has uncovered which trends have survived the TikTok trend cycle and have made an impact on the beauty world, with Siren Eyes coming out as the biggest online beauty trend of 2023.

The study conducted by online platform Wethrift, as part of their Micro-Trends Culture: Mapped report, and took a seed list of the most popular beauty trends and analysed Google search volume, TikTok views, and Instagram hashtags and gave each factor a score out of 10 to give trends an overall score out of 40, with siren eyes receiving 28.6.

Siren eyes draw inspiration from Greek mythology, and the trend is all about creating a sultry effect with eyeliner to elongate the eye.

#Sireneyes on TikTok has surpassed a 1.2 billion views so far.

Skin Cycling was a close second with a score of 28.5, the trend involves creating a cycle of days when you use skincare products and days when you don’t.

During the time of the study, Google Trends data saw a 1,200% increase in Google searches year on year, and the TikTok hashtag #skincycling received 451 million views.

In third place was Glazed Doughnut Nails, with a score of 27.9 which are nude nails with a pearlescent finish.

The nail craze has seen 229 million TikTok views, and 39,709 Instagram hashtags, after being popularised by celebrities such as Hayley Bieber wearing them.

The list also sees trends such as skin flooding and Barbie-core, which have been prevalent on the TikTok scene.

The list is reflective of the rise in the clean girl aesthetic which has taken over social media in recent years with slicked back pony tails and minimal make-up.
