‘Glass skin’ continues to dominate TikTok as 2024’s top skincare trend

Published 11th Dec 2024 by Erin Leybourne

December offers an opportunity to look back at the year and see the trends that shaped the industry.

With that in mind, The Wellness Co. has looked at TikTok data to see what people have been making posts about in 2024, driving interest in new topics.

TikTok continues to drive skincare trends, with trends such as ‘slugging’ reaching 285,000 posts worldwide.

‘Glass skin’ came in first place with 718,300 posts. The Korean beauty term refers to smooth, dewy skin with a flawless, glass-like appearance, and has been piquing interest in the western world for over half a decade.

Second place ‘slugging’ refers to an overnight treatment where people apply an occlusive product to the skin to ‘lock in’ moisture. The technique is not flawless though and can cause breakouts in oily skin.

Focusing more on the muscles on the face, gua sha and face yoga also saw a lot of traffic in 2024, with 203,000 and 171,444 posts respectively.

Face yoga is a popular TikTok skincare trend that involves performing specific facial exercises and movements to tone and strengthen the facial muscles. Users typically follow routines that include stretching, massaging, and holding various poses with the face to promote blood circulation, reduce tension, and potentially diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Snail slime, referring to the skincare ingredient snail mucin, came in at fifth with 72,024 posts. Snail mucin is an ingredient well known for its hydrating and soothing properties, ideal for dry and sensitive skin.

11,156 posts about ‘acne spray’ make it the sixth most talked about trend on TikTok. Hypochlorous acid spray reduces inflammation and has antiseptic properties to reduce breakouts.

Seventh place goes to ‘in–flight skincare’ where people focus on a skincare routine to protect skin from the harsh air of long-haul aircon.

Finally in eighth with 3,366 posts, ‘chin strapping’ is another eastern trend that has made its way across the world. The practice involves wearing a specialised chin strap during sleep, often as part of an elaborate overnight routine aimed at facial "sculpting" or enhancing jaw definition.

This trend, which is part of a broader "morning shed" routine on the platform, often includes other items like mouth tape to encourage nasal breathing, under-eye patches, and face masks intended to reduce puffiness.
