Cosmetic surgery up 5%, with 'man boob' ops topping growth
Britons are still finding ways to fund cosmetic surgery during the recession, with 'man boob' ops topping the list of procedures that have grown in popularity, according to new figures. The latest audit of cosmetic doctors from industry body the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), showed that the number of procedures rose to 38,274 last year, an increase of 5% on 2009. The number of gynaecomastia or 'moob' operations performed in the UK rose 28% year on year in 2010, making it now the second most popular male procedure after rhinoplasty ('nose jobs'). Facelifts were also in demand, with a 12% increase in procedures in 2010, while breast augmentation saw a 10% rise to 9,418 ops and is still the most popular procedure over all. The only procedures to go down in favour were tummy tucks (abdominoplasty), which were down 7.5% and pinning back prominent ears (otoplasty), down 17%. Fazel Fatah, consultant plastic surgeon and president of BAAPS said: 'The public's interest in aesthetic surgery remained strong in spite of the economic downturn. Procedures showing the more considerable rise during this period seem to be, perhaps not surprisingly, concentrated on the most visible areas of the body: facelifts, breasts and nose jobs. Surgeries that decreased in popularity were for the areas which could potentially be 'hidden' or disguised by fashionand hairstyles, such as tummy tucks and pinning back prominent ears.'
