PB MEETS: Sandra McClumpha, Owner and CEO of one of the largest international tanning companies Fake Bake

Professional Beauty catches up with Sandra McClumpha, one of Britain’s most successful individuals and sole owner of the tanning brand Fake Bake.

Fake Bake has now expanded to offer make-up, tanning at home, tanning in salons and tanning training to name but a few. It has become the largest self-tan company in the world. Through this interview Sandra discusses the ins and outs of Fake Bake and the new offers and products it will be launching at Professional Beauty North in October.

PB:  What would you say was your most popular product?

SM: Our Original Tanner has always been our hero product but since the launch of Flawless this has out sold every other product that we offer. The new ‘ 60 Minute’ version of the Flawless is the one to watch out for next – a tanning solution that requires just 60 Minutes to develop.

PB: How do you differentiate from your competitors?

SM: Our formulation is unique with only premium ingredients to give you the most natural long lasting colour. We NEVER make claims about our products we cannot back up, Fake Bake is what it is and does what is says.

PB: What would be the cost to professionals looking to start using Urban Tan products?

SM: We have excellent start up packages to suit all salons and mobile therapists depending on their needs and this year at the show we are introducing our newly designed kits especially for students. We can tailor make a package to suit every budget so you can maximize the potential for your business.

PB: What support do you offer professionals who use your products?

SM: We have training academies in Glasgow, Warrington and London that offer full service training from spray tanning to hands on application training. We have just finalized our advanced course that will include marketing and advanced spraying techniques.  I will also be conducting seminars for all the Fake Bake Therapists throughout the year as I have been in the Hair and Beauty Business for over 25 years and want to share my knowledge.

PB: Why should salon owners visit your stand at the show?

SM: Every salon owner should visit our stand to see all the new products and services on offer plus get the chance to speak to the company directly. We are here to answer any questions they have about the brand whether they are already using Fake Bake or thinking of offering Fake Bake.

PB: Are you having anything new on your stand at the show?

SM: The two new lines we launched this year are 60 Minute and Sport Daily Tan that will feature. However, we will also be launching the student kits with an offer and you will have a sneak preview of our updated cosmetic line too which is going to be very exciting!

PB: Will you be having any special offers exclusive to the show?

SM: We always offer VAT free on our products at the show

PB: What tips would you give salon owners looking to introduce a new line into their salon?

SM: Always research a product before you introduce anything into your salon, as it is your name above the door. If a product does not perform the way it should, your client will think you have not performed the treatment properly so make sure the products live up to the claims!

PB: What’s taking place at the moment outside of the show?

SM: We are really excited to be continually working on our charity campaign Save Your Skin that raises money for the Donna Mortimer Ballantyne Foundation and RAFT. It is so important to tan safely and we want to educate everyone that if you want to go out in the sun it is possible to do it safely but the best way is to always fake it! The 2012 campaign has been such a massive success already with more support than ever before – especially from high profile individuals and celebrities!

Fake Bake will be at Professional Beauty North on stand D53. See the Fake Bake product range and special offers here.
