Trend watch: EMS fat-reduction and muscle stimulation treatments

Electric muscle stimulation or electric magnetic stimulation (EMS) is a technology used to reduce fat and build muscle.

It is a medical technology that is used in aesthetic medicine, urology and gynecology and uses focused electro-magnetic fields with safe intensity levels.

The electro-magnetic fields pass non-invasively through the body and interact with motor neurons, which subsequently trigger muscle contractions.

EMS the new era

EMS has regained popularity in recent months. This non-invasive body-contouring technology not only burns fat, but also builds muscle, while at the same time improving strength, and endurance levels.

One of the latest devices to hit the market is EMSlimHI-EMT (high-Intensity electromagnetic muscle trainer) device designed for aesthetic purposes, having two applicators with high intensity.

The treatment requires no anesthesia, incisions, or discomfort. In fact, patients can sit back and relax, while the device performs up to 30,000 contractions.

The two applicators are placed on the target muscle area, such as the abs, thighs, arms or buttocks. The applicators then generate intense electromagnetic pulses that cause involuntary muscle contractions.

These contractions trigger the release of free fatty acids, which break down localised fat deposits and increase muscular tone and strength.

The exposure of muscles to these contractions also leads to muscle strengthening and growth as well as aiding performance and endurance levels.

EMSlim focuses the electromagnetic field through all skin and fat in order to effectively stimulate the muscle, providing the most intensive continuous contractions which is ideal for muscle growth, and inducing apoptosis, that takes place over the course of 10-14 days, rather than months.

EMSlim’s unique workout programmes consist of a series of physical training programmes, which have been designed for maximum stimulation, leading to the best result.

EMS's effect on muscle and fat

The muscle is forced to remain in a contracted state for multiple seconds. When repeatedly exposed to these high load conditions, the muscle tissue is stressed and is forced to adapt.

The principle of cell apoptosis, induced by increased muscle concentrations, releases free fatty acids that breakdown the surrounding fat.
