#PBLive (Aug 22): top stories – schools ban acrylic nails and new stats on women’s body confidence issues

Body confidence, a nail extension ban in schools and Brits getting savvy about sun protection were the topics discussed in this week’s beauty news round-up.

Coming live from our new office in Wimbledon, PB’s editor Eve Oxberry (left), social media editor Chris Halpin (middle) and deputy editor Amanda Pauley (right) dish the goss on what beauty pros have been talking about this week.

First up was the news that almost a quarter of women feel uncomfortable in their own skin because they think they don’t meet “typical beauty standards”.

This report stirred up the debate about the role the beauty industry has played in women’s lack of self-esteem, with only 10% of respondents feeling that brands use realistic representations of women in their campaigns.

Another story that has really got people debating on Facebook is the news that a school near Newcastle has banned nail extensions following a dispute with a pupil and her mother.

The student was asked to remove her green acrylic extensions before a college placement on a beauty course on health and safety grounds and when she refused, the pupil wasn’t allowed to attend the course and instead spent the week in isolation in school.

Many of you have been questioning who would even put acrylic nails on a 15-year-old, with many salons refusing to treat those under 16 years of age.

The last news bulletin of the session was the story that consumers are turning to foundations with added benefits to ace their base, wanting a flawless finish as well as hydration and adequate sun protection.
