How to treat stretch marks with microneedling and radiofrequency

Over the years, many of us develop stretch marks for various reasons – sudden weight or muscle gain, pregnancy or puberty. Anyone can get them, regardless of gender, but they affect women more than men. According to the NHS, around 8 in 10 women get them during pregnancy.

While some women are proud to show off their “tiger stripes”, others actively search for treatments to reduce their appearance. As we embrace body positivity, we can still try various treatments such as microneedling and radiofrequency to reduce their appearance.

What are stretch marks and why do we get them?

Stretch marks, also called striae, are indented streaks that appear on our bodies. They usually develop on the abdomen, buttocks, thighs and arms.

Depending on the skin colour, they tend to be pink, red, purple or dark brown when they first develop. With time, the colour fades, turning them white, silver or light brown.

They appear when there is a period of rapid growth in your body that suddenly stretches the skin and, in turn, causes collagen bundles under your skin to tear away from each other.

This area may begin to look wrinkled and lined because it is not supported by the same collagen structure underneath.

What is radiofrequency microneedling and how can it help treat stretch marks?

Microneedling with radiofrequency is an advanced method of skin rejuvenation that stimulates the body’s natural healing process to encourage collagen production in the dermis, resulting in rejuvenated and tightened skin.

Since stretch marks disrupt the natural production of collagen, microneedling and radiofrequency will not only help to restart that production, but the overproduction of elastin and collagen will help heal the damaged connective tissue in the dermis that creates the stretch mark.

This treatment is also excellent for stretch marks because it penetrates the skin deep enough to create a reaction within the same layer that the stretch marks are created instead of resting on the surface.

It is a minimally invasive treatment that has rapidly become one of the most popular professional skin treatments.

3D Dermaforce, a microneedling and radiofrequency device from 3D Aesthetics, offers a controlled insertion of the needles into the skin at seven different depths (0.5mm, 1mm, 1.5mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm, 3.0mm, 3.5mm), which allows practitioners to adapt to different skin thicknesses, types and indications.

How does radiofrequency microneedling work?

3D Dermaforce is a market-leading microneedling and radiofrequency device from 3D Aesthetics, endorsed by industry leaders such as Dr Jonquille Chantrey.

During the 3D Dermaforce treatment, the fine needles create tiny holes in the skin and deliver bi-Polar radiofrequency energy through the lower portion of the needle.

The gold-plated, insulated needles allow precise delivery of heat to the dermal layer of the skin. This protects the epidermal layer from thermal damage, prevents heat-related pigmentation issues, and reduces the chance of aggressive side effects such as scabbing.

Collagen fibres are contracted, stimulating fibroblast activity, resulting in the formation of new and healthy collagen cells.

The addition of radiofrequency heats the collagen fibres in the dermis to between 55-65ºC, helping to stimulate the body’s natural healing process.

The 3D Dermaforce is equipped with a vacuum, which means that the needles are only inserted when the skin and the tip are in full contact. This ensures an even depth of delivery across the skin.

What aftercare and downtime is needed?

3D Aesthetics recommends a regenerative and hydrating skincare routine and other superficial facials to enhance and speed up the results.

As this is a non-surgical treatment, there is no downtime and clients can continue with most day-to-day activities. However, the epidermis layer will remain open for up to 24 hours, and the skin will remain vulnerable for this time; therefore, post-treatment advice is essential.
