7 expert tips for succeeding as a semi-permanent makeup artist

Published 13th Oct 2024 by Ellen Cummings

As a top semi-permanent makeup (SPMU) artist, Nez Hasan has built a name for herself in the beauty industry.

However, her journey to success wasn’t a straight line. From working in a family-run business to establishing herself as a go-to SPMU expert, Hasan's career has involved some big decisions and clever business strategies.

Along the way, Hasan has learned some invaluable lessons; here are some of her top tips for success:

1. Start with a clear vision and passion for beauty

Hasan's journey into SPMU began with a desire for freedom and a love for beauty. After feeling unfulfilled in her previous job outside the industry, she made the decision to pursue a career in beauty – something she had always been passionate about.

"I wanted to be my own boss and have freedom," she says. Having a genuine passion for beauty will not only keep you motivated but also help you stay committed when challenges arise.

2. Find a mentor and invest in your training

After discovering microblading while browsing Instagram, Hasan researched the treatment and at the time found that the results in Turkey were superior to those available in London.

Determined to bring that quality to the UK, she sought out the best teachers.

"I found a really, really good teacher near Wales and trained with her," she recalls. Investing in quality training from experts can make all the difference when starting out.

3. Embrace social media to build your brand

When Hasan first started her SPMU business, she utilised her personal Instagram account to attract clients.

"The moment I started posting treatments, people were shocked and saying, 'What is this?'" she explains.

Social media became her most powerful tool for gaining exposure and educating potential clients about semi-permanent makeup.

She advises SPMU artists to leverage platforms like Instagram, where visuals can showcase your work and build your reputation.

4. Collaborate with influencers for exposure

One of the key strategies Hasan used to grow her business was working with influencers.

"I took on as many influencers as possible, and the exposure was incredible," she says.

By offering treatments to influential figures, Hasan's work quickly spread through word of mouth, with clients booking appointments after seeing the results online.

This approach helped her grow her client base rapidly and gave her business a significant boost.

5. Foster strong relationships with clients and influencers

Hasan emphasises the importance of building and maintaining strong relationships.

"All of the influencers I started with still come to me, and we have such a good relationship," she says.

Treating influencers and clients with care has been essential to her business's longevity and success. These relationships can lead to consistent bookings and ongoing referrals.

6. Offer services that enhance natural beauty

Hasan is known for her philosophy of enhancing natural beauty rather than drastically changing a client’s appearance.

"I always said that if I’m going to do these brows, I’m going to make sure they look really natural," she explains.

By focusing on subtle enhancements, she ensures that clients are pleased with the results long term, which helps build trust and positive word of mouth.

This approach also attracts a wider client base, including those who want a polished but natural look.

7. Stay up to date with trends and offer specialised treatments

While Hasan started with microblading, she quickly expanded her services to include microshading, powder brows, lip blushing and even areola tattooing.

"I try to stay on track with what's the latest," she advises.

Offering diverse treatments can help attract more clients, but it's important to specialise in a few key services that align with your philosophy and skill set.

For Hasan, this meant focusing on natural brows and other treatments that enhance rather than overpower natural beauty.

Nez Hasan is a renowned semi-permanent makeup artist who has nearly 10 years' experience in the beauty industry. She has a passion for enhancing natural beauty and offers a range of treatments to an international client base.
