A new analysis of global search trends reveals an incredible 837% increase in interest in alternative healing modalities since 2016.

From yoga and Pilates to acupuncture and chiropractic treatments, wellness seekers are turning to complementary therapies more than ever before.

Global interest in alternative healing sees unprecedented growth

The world is embracing alternative healing like never before, with a new study showing an 837% increase in global search interest since 2016.

According to analysis by Healthnews, monthly searches for 35 key alternative therapies surged from 7.09m in 2016 to 66.41m in 2024.

While part of this growth can be attributed to the 70% increase in global internet users during this period, the demand for complementary wellness approaches has still far outpaced digital expansion.

Yoga and Pilates lead the way

Yoga has cemented itself as the most searched alternative therapy worldwide, with monthly Google queries jumping from 3.2m 2016 to 30m 2024 – a remarkable 838% rise.

Pilates, despite having a smaller search volume, saw an even greater percentage surge of 942%, growing from 960,000 to 10m searches per month.

Leading alternative healing trends:
  • Yoga: 838% increase in searches globally
  • Pilates: 942% growth, surpassing yoga in relative percentage increase
  • Chiropractic care: 594% growth, despite ongoing debates about its effectiveness
  • Meditation: 823% rise, highlighting a growing focus on mental wellbeing
  • Acupuncture: 569% increase, cementing its place as a sought-after healing method
  • Ayurveda: Gaining traction in the US and globally, Ayurveda has broken into the top 10 most popular healing modalities in 2024. This ancient Indian system of medicine emphasises balance through diet, herbal remedies and holistic practices. Read more about Ayurveda here.

Shifts in popularity and regional differences

While the top-ranking alternative therapies remain consistent, there have been notable shifts in popularity.

Thai massage climbed from 11th place in 2016 to 7th in 2024, reflecting its growing appeal.

Meanwhile, herbal medicine saw a relative decline in global searches, dropping from 14th to 26th place.

In the US, interest in alternative healing also surged, with a 694% increase in search volume.

Pilates overtook chiropractic services as the second most searched modality, and Ayurveda broke into the U.S. top 10 for the first time.

Acupressure experienced the most dramatic jump, rising from 16th to 11th place, with a 1,300% increase in searches.

Why are more people seeking alternative healing?

Several factors are driving this surge in interest. A growing desire for holistic health solutions, dissatisfaction with conventional healthcare and a shift toward proactive wellbeing have all contributed to the trend.

While some therapies have strong scientific backing, others remain controversial, highlighting the importance of professional guidance when incorporating alternative treatments into wellness routines.

As consumer interest in alternative healing continues to grow, salons, spas and wellness practitioners may find new opportunities to integrate these sought-after therapies into their offerings, meeting the rising demand for holistic wellbeing solutions.
