Lip products boost UK prestige beauty sales
UK beauty consumers are spending more on lip products, with sales growing by 8%, generating £70 million in the 12 months ending August 2013.
The US and France also saw growth in sales for lip products, by 11% and 1% respectively, but sales fell in Italy, down by 4% and Spain, down by 2%, according to new data from analyst NPD Group.
Lip liner is the star product in the sector, which saw an 11% growth in the UK. Lip colour and applicators also performed well, both seeing a 7% growth. However, lip gloss is failing to make UK beauty consumers spend their cash, falling by 3%.
The average price of lip colour in the UK between September 2012 and August 2013 was £19, an increase of 3%.
Karen Grant, vice president and senior global industry analyst at The NPD Group, said: “Lips are keeping in step with the nail color trend this year. Consumers are responding to the new options and innovations in beauty and what better way than with some bold lips that make a statement.”
She added: ““Innovations in lip are winning consumers over with the ability to provide rich color, as well as moisture and high shine – a perfect combination to enhance appearance while providing the benefits women are looking for.”
