Natural skincare in demand in China

Natural skincare products are in high demand in the Chinese market, with 90% of female consumers in the country in the habit of buying skincare centred on natural ingredients – according to a recent Mintel report.

These numbers rise to 92% in the 30-39 age group and to 94% for those with a monthly salary of £1,000 or above.

The Mintel report also found that 80% of urban female consumers always check skincare products for a list of ingredients before making a purchase, with as many as 90% stating that the safety of skincare products is becoming more important to them. Both figures point to a clear and growing focus on natural skincare devoid of potentially harmful ingredients.

Skincare products with plant-based or herbal ingredients have dominated the new products segment of the Chinese skincare market for a number of years, according to Mintel’s Global New Products Database. Representing 52% of new product launches in 2008, natural skincare products had risen to a significant 73% by 2011.

Jane Henderson, Global President, Beauty & Personal Care Division, at Mintel commented that: “Increasing urbanisation and demand for natural beauty products presents real opportunity for brands looking to capitalise on the Chinese marketplace.”

The Chinese skincare market in its entirety is experiencing continued growth, with the facial skincare sector worth £6.9bn in 2012, up from £3.8bn in 2007. The figure is expected to have risen to £11bn by 2017.
