Our View from the Beauty Closet: Dermalogica UltraSmoothing Eye Serum

Opinions are split as to whether or not it's actually beneficial to use a product formulated specifically for the under eye area, with one side stating you can simply use your facial moisturiser, whilst the other advocates the need for an eye cream.

I fall into the pro eye cream category.

The skin around the eye area is extremely delicate (the equivalent to five sheets of paper!) and produces very little oil. In fact, once you hit puberty the glands stop producing oil (oh.my.god) so keeping the area hydrated and protected with a more concentrated, specialist product makes sense to me.

Having a very sensitive eye area means the richer cream formulations give me milia, little white bumps under my eyes, whereas the gel textures leave the skin feeling dry and sticky. Not fun. Dermalogica’s new addition to their famous UltraCalming range, the UltraSmoothing Eye Serum has definitely hit the periorbital spot.

The serum is billed as a ‘powerful treatment fluid’ containing an advanced peptide known to encourage collagen-producing activities, smooth fine lines and target signs of aging around the eyes. Brown and Red Algae and Golden Chamomile target puffiness and Oat Kernel Extract helps soothe fragile skin. The consistency is that of a light oil but it immediately absorbs into the skin without leaving any kind of residue, or sticky feeling on the skin, so you can use it under your makeup too.

I have been keeping this beside the bed and applying it religiously for two weeks now, and I’ve actually noticed a difference. The verdict is still out on whether I’m looking any younger, but my under eye area somehow feels slightly tighter and less fragile, something I have not found with any other eye product.
