PB Upskills (Feb 15–19): Save Our Salons campaign and understanding HIV

Our PB Upskills programme for February 15–19 will cover an array of hot topics such as treating clients with blood-borne viruses, the important mission of the Save Our Salons campaign during coronavirus, and how salons and spas can retail successfully online and offline.
We will also have a masterclass on understanding Google Ads so you can boost your salon or spa’s revenue with targeted pay-per-click advertising, as well as how to create a social media plan you actually have time for.
What to expect from our PB Upskills series (February 15–19):
Monday 15 February – 2:30pm – Digital Skills Live with Debbie Lewis – “How to create a salon social media plan you actually have time for”
Planning and implementing a social media strategy on little or no budget can be a daunting task. In this interactive session, social media expert Debbie Lewis will explain how to create and implement an organic schedule that is achievable for you, whether you have a large salon team or work alone, and how to analyse and tweak it as you go to make sure it is getting you the results you need for your business. There will be a 10-minute audience Q&A at the end where you can ask Lewis your burning questions.

Tuesday 16 February – 12pm – Practical Skills Live with Sam Marshall, Becky Mitchell and Becky Pang – “Understanding HIV in beauty”
In this educational Practical Skills session we will be discussing the topic of understanding HIV in beauty, covering what HIV is, HIV disclosure and the law, how to adapt your consultation forms, advice on treating clients with blood-borne viruses in salon and much more.
Our panel – Sam Marshall, owner of The Beauty Guru and HIV awareness ambassador; Becky Mitchell, who has an MBE for services to HIV Awareness and has been living well with HIV since 2012; and Becky Pang, HIV positive speaker and service user engagement and training co-ordinator for a HIV support and prevention service – will also share some stories around discrimination and awareness, and explain what more the beauty industry could be doing. There will be a 10-minute audience Q&A at the end where you can ask the panellists your questions.

Tuesday 16 February – 1pm – Tough Talk – “Live with Becky Woodhouse, chief executive of Pure Spa”
In this Tough Talk session, Professional Beauty managing director Mark Moloney will quiz Pure Spa chief executive Becky Woodhouse on how she built up her multi-site salon, spa and retail business. They will cover the tips she picked up along the way, including the mistakes she made and what she learned from them, how a background in accountancy helped her build a strong business, and how it is surviving and adapting during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wednesday 17 February – 1:30pm – Live with the Save Our Salons founders – “Spotlight on: Save Our Salons campaign”
In this PB Upskills session, we will be talking to the people behind Save Our Salons to discuss why it is so important for beauty, spa and hair professionals to get involved in the campaign and to give an overview of what the initiative has achieved so far. For example, the group is currently campaigning to get an urgent reduction in the VAT rate for salons, spas and other personal care businesses.
The Save Our Salons panel will include Hellen Ward, director of Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa; Luke Hersheson, chief executive of Hershesons; Stephen Nurse, operations director of Daniel Galvin; Toby Dicker, co-founder of The Chapel; and Kim Clayton, business partner at Errol Douglas.

Thursday 18 February – 12:30pm – Business Skills Live with Valerie Delforge (part three) – “The five steps to retail success online and offline”
