Spray tanning is safe, argues CTPA

In the wake of comments from US scientists prompting fears over the safety of spray tanning, the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA) has spoken out in support of the industry.
The CTPA said that the European Commission’s independent expert scientific committee, the SCCS, has reviewed the self-tanning ingredient DHA.
The SCCS looked at data to support the use of DHA in cosmetic formulations and specifically its use in spray cabins. The SCCS found that the use of DHA as a self-tanning ingredient in spray cabins “will not pose a risk to the health of the consumer”.
The CPTA also stressed that in Europe the manufacture and import of all cosmetic products are covered by strict safety laws and undergo a safety assessment before they can be brought to market.
Spray tanning manufacturers have also had to appease their salon and spa accounts concerned about their clients’ reaction to the news reported on ABC News’s Good Morning America.
Chris Johnson, managing director of Aviva Labs sunless products, said, “There are no new facts contained in the ABC piece. The research being referred to was done in 1999.”
Johnson has suggested that salons should offer clients nose filters, lip balm and eye protection if they have any concerns.
