[Video] 3 ways to make it as a successful make-up artist

Want to know what it takes to make it as top MUA? Celebrity make-up artist Armand Beasley spills the beans on the skills, experience and networking you need to do to cement your name in the industry.

From securing session work and getting your name out there on social media, to the right etiquette to have on set, Beasley explains the key skills you need to make it big.

1. Have a USP

“For me, one of the most important things is to have a USP (unique selling point),” says Beasley. “Focus on what is special about you. For me, I’m a cruelty-free make-up artist, so that means everything that’s in my kit is not sold in mainland China and people know exactly what they are getting. Work on [your USP], keep it as a strength and you’ll fly.”

2. Take every opportunity

“No job is too small as far as I’m concerned because there’s always something positive that comes out of it. So, even if it’s a very small fee that you’re getting, there’s always going to be something positive [that comes out of it] – whether it’s publicity or somebody you meet through that person,” explains Beasley. “You’ll never know where that job could lead. So, say yes to everything”.

3. Make yourself invaluable

“Another thing that is really important is great communication skills. It’s vital, not just to rely on social media and your work in print, but to communicate and network too. Talk to people, badger existing make-up artists, ask to assist them and think ahead for them. If you do assist them, they don’t have to think and then you become invaluable,” adds Beasley.
