Boosting your therapists’ wellbeing through nutrition

With mental wellbeing in the spotlight, we asked Aromatherapy Associates’ wellbeing expert Yvonne Wake how you can keep your therapists mentally healthy.

In our exclusive video, Wake talks about the subject of “mindful eating” and how you can boost your therapists’ wellbeing by offering nutritional snacks in salon.

Wake’s top tips for boosting your therapists’ wellbeing:

  1. Help them start the day right
“Therapists spend a lot of hours in a room and spend a lot of energy talking to their clients, so they need to eat energetic foods,” says Wake. “The first thing they need to do is eat breakfast. If somebody has come from a long way, an hour and a half journey, they may not have had breakfast. They run in and their first client is at 10am and they don’t have the energy, so offer a light breakfast.”
  1. Offer healthy nibbles
“Offer snacks too. Make sure your therapists take a break, even if it’s just 15 minutes with a cup of coffee or tea, fruit or muesli,” adds Wake.
  1. Invest in workplace mindfulness
“There’s one thing about mindful eating that we need to understand. It’s your body giving you a message – a message of hunger, satiety, satisfaction and a happy or sad mood. [We need to] teach therapists to understand and listen to those messages in the body and respond,” explains Wake.
  1. Look into quick snacks
“Consider buying some quick snacks – peanuts, small bars with the right amount of sugar in to give them energy… and fruit,” says Wake.
