Beauty industry encouraged to have its say in review of aesthetics training

Beauty professionals are being invited to have their say in a review of the qualifications for non-surgical aesthetic procedures.

As the industry awaits the full outcome of the Keogh Review, government body Health Education North West London, which is part of Health Education England, has been tasked with a review of the existing qualifications required for procedures such as dermal fillers.

As part of the review, Health Education North West London has this week launched its call for evidence, seeking input from beauty industry bodies such as Habia and Babtac as well as training providers and insurers

Other groups being invited to give evidence will include professional organisations such as the British Association of Cosmetic Nurses and the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

Performance and delivery manager for the review, Carol Jollie, said, “We’re looking at knowledge skills, attitudes and behaviours, teaching methods, types of assessments, and which part of the curriculum should be under supervision.”

Health Education North West London has not been tasked with developing any qualification, although Jollie speculated that it may involve “some core training that anyone delivering non-surgical cosmetic interventions might need to undertake… like safety or consent, which are the same across all treatments”, along with element specific to different interventions.

The Keogh Review, published last year, recommended that non-healthcare practitioners should be able to perform non-surgical aesthetic procedures if they have achieved a standardised and regulated qualification. The Government’s full response to the Review is expected this month.
