Bio-hacking and postbiotics among top 7 wellness trends for 2022

Bio-hacking and postbiotics will lead the way in wellness trends in 2022, with amino acids, collagen, fermented supplements and adaptogenics also set to rise in popularity, according to Holland & Barrett’s Wellness Report.

The first report from the retailer, customer managing director Harvey Bennett said how “trend forecasters and product developers have identified the top wellness trends for 2022” as the new year provides “an opportunity for our wellness to flourish once again.”

7 of the predicted wellness trends for 2022 are:

  1. Amino acids

Amino acid-based supplement 5-HTP and l-glycine, which work with your body’s natural rhythms, are set to heavily feature in 2022 after 65% of the UK population experienced issues with sleep between October 2020 and March 2021.

  1. Postbiotics

Holland & Barrett saw a 10% increase across their gut health range in 2021 as postbiotics, the by-products of the fermentation process carried out by probiotics in the intestine, are set to rise in popularity. Postbiotics aid in boosting the immune system and reduce digestive symptoms.

  1. Adaptogenics

Adaptogens – plant-based substances found in nature that may help the body during stressful times – are set to continue growing in popularity next year as consumers continue to shift into plant-based living. Holland and Barrett predict the mango leaf and Rhodiola rosea, both of which are like ashwagandha, will be seen more in the next year.

  1. Collagen

As beauty-from-within trended throughout 2021, collagen became more prominent in supplements and home treatments, with a 22% increase in injectable collagen products, the report found. Existing collagen products are set to be expanded, dubber “Collagen +” with the addition of active agents such as lycopene and ceramide extracts to increase results.

  1. Fermented supplements

Holland & Barrett reported a 60% year-on-year increase in the sales of fermented food products such as kombucha, sauerkraut and kefir. To make these products more accessible and easier to implement into consumers’ routines, fermented products are set to be taken out of the fridge and into the form of supplements.

This ties in with another recent report which has predicted that fermented beauty products will be huge in 2022

  1. Nutrient bio-hacking

Nutrient testing and diagnostics are set to see a rise in 2022, with bio-hacking or the practice of trying to change your chemistry or physiology by what you put into your body, set to become more popular as consumers try to better understand their gut microbiome.

  1. Complete nutrition

As the global complete nutrition products market size is set to reach $6.3 billion (£4.750 billion) by 2028, according to research by Grand View Research, customers are looking for complete nutrition with minimal effort as they return to life on-the-go post-coronavirus pandemic.
