Clinicians want dermal fillers reclassified

More than two-thirds of clinicians have said they want dermal fillers reclassified as medicines, just weeks ahead of the outcome of the aesthetics review.

The Government review into cosmetic procedures, which covers non-surgical procedures such as botox and fillers as well as cosmetic surgery, was launched in the summer in the wake of the PIPs breast implants scandal.

According to research from new B2B event Clinical Cosmetic & Reconstructive Expo, two-thirds of practitioners, including surgeons, doctors and nurses, said that the lines between non-surgical and surgical procedures had become blurred.

The research also highlighted practitioners’ concerns about the misuse of injectables.

The majority (85%) believe that current systems for regulation, such as the voluntary TreatmentsYouCanTrust register, do not protect patients from unscrupulous practices.

The same number states there was a need for tighter regulations in the aesthetic sector and nearly three out of five (57%) said the Government was wrong to deregulate lasers.

The majority (84%) also said that surgical and non-surgical specialists should share their expertise and communicate more.
