Developing your own cosmetics line – what do you need to know?

Whether distributing, selling or using within a salon, when a company purchases cosmetics from outside of Europe it automatically becomes their responsibility to ensure that the products meet the European legal requirements.

Salon owners looking to develop or distribute their own products should firstly familiarise themselves with their legal responsibilities and seek guidance from a regulatory body such as the HPRA.

The role of the HPRA is to regulate the manufacture, sale and supply of cosmetic products in Ireland. They identify and address cosmetic product compliance and safety issues, in conjunction with the Health Service Executive (HSE), so that a cosmetic product will not compromise the health and safety of the consumer or the person applying the product. The organisation has published guidance to assist companies and individuals who manufacture, distribute and/or sell cosmetics and help them to understand their legal requirements.

The HPRA will be exhibiting at stand L57 at Professional Beauty & HJ Live Ireland. There will be leaflets and information packs for distributors and manufacturers of cosmetics at their stand and theywill be available to answer any questions you may have. During the show there will also be cosmetic product information packs available to assist salon owners looking to develop their own cosmetics.

More information on the regulation of cosmetics can be found on their website www.hpra.ie. Queries and requests for information can also be e-mailed to [email protected].
