Jane Iredale student competition winner revealed

Blossoming make-up artists showcased their creative flare at the fourth Jane Iredale National Student Make-up Competition. The competition took place on the 26th June in London’s Dorchester hotel to coincide with the 20th Anniversary of the Jane Iredale brand. The six finalists were chosen from 150 candidates studying beauty therapy and make-up across 60 colleges nationwide.

The competition was hosted Jane Iredale UK distributor iiaa, whose college programme trains students on leadership and provides advice on how to succeed in their future roles in the industry.

This year, the students had to seek inspiration from their favourite music videos and create an adaption using Jane Iredale cosmetics. Students were given two days of extra training at the iiaa’s London head office.

The judging panel was comprised of brand founder Jane Iredale, make-up artists Sarah Jagger and Karla Powell, Jane Iredale brand manager Danielle Bookatz and iiaa college programme manager Jennifer Edwards. The judges scored contestants on interpretation of the theme, use and exploration of advanced techniques, and most importantly the overall final look.

 Winner Joanna Davies, who studies theatrical make-up at University College Birmingham, was inspired by Freddie Mercury’s red eye shadow and feathers in Queen’s “It’s A Hard Life” video. She won a £1000 make-up kit for herself and a £500 kit for her college home in Birmingham. Each finalist also won a further four-day make-up training course with iiaa.

Beauty journalist and TV make-up expert Sarah Jagger commented, “It was a hard decision to make because all the finalists created incredible work, however Joanna's work ticked every box for me. Joanna had clearly designed her work with face and body paints yet managed to adapt the design using the range ingeniously.”
