Look Good Feel Better issues urgent appeal to beauty industry
Look Good Feel Better has launched an urgent appeal for beauty industry professionals to support those undergoing cancer treatment.
To mark its 30th anniversary, national cancer support charity Look Good Feel Better has launched its 2024 Urgent Appeal for Volunteers to support people facing cancer in the UK.
The charity is reaching out to trained beauty professionals who are interested in making a real difference and supporting people in managing the physical side effects of cancer treatment.
Look Good Feel Better was set up in 1994 and runs workshops that offer practical advice to women, men, and young adults about changes during cancer treatment to the skin, eyebrows, eyelashes, hair, and nails and how to improve body confidence.
Led by beauty and health expert volunteers, the workshops offer a relaxing environment for people to socialise, make friends and talk to others facing similar challenges.
The charity’s recent annual survey revealed the benefits of volunteering are wide-reaching: a greater sense of community, improved knowledge and opportunities to meet new people, as well as an improved sense of well-being. One volunteer said, "Seeing the positive impact on beneficiaries, I’m really motivated by making a difference. Volunteering is always the highlight of my week.”
To qualify as a volunteer, you need to:
- Commit to running at least three workshops a year
- Have a professional qualification (NVQ level 2+ or equivalent)
- Have at least one year’s hands-on experience working in the beauty, make-up, men’s grooming industry.
Chief executive Mark Flannery said, “With the number of people affected by cancer due to rise to four million in the next five years, our services are more important than ever before.
“Our workshops boost the physical and emotional wellbeing of people living with cancer, and our volunteers play a vital role in ensuring that we can reach out to anyone living with a cancer diagnosis. To date, we have supported over 200,000 people, but there is much more work to be done.
“We want everyone to feel empowered, motivated, and less isolated – to look good, but most importantly feel even better. And we need volunteers now more than ever before.”
