PB Upskills (Feb 1–5): ways your salon could be losing money and spray tan and lash extension tips
Our PB Upskills programme for February 1–5 is set to deliver some free, first-class education for professionals during coronavirus, whether you own a salon, spa or mobile/home-based beauty business.
Our line-up for February 1–5 will cover how to achieve a flawless glow on clients post-lockdown and the common spray tan mistakes therapists make, a look at the ways your business could be losing money, a full-proof guide to the key social media platforms, and a Q&A to some of the most challenging lash extension and lash lift queries.
We will also be having a frank discussion with Finlay Anderson, the InterContinental Hotels Group’s (IHG) first area spa and leisure director for UK North, who is streamlining protocols to turn the company’s spa sites into wellness experiences – all during the coronavirus pandemic; as well as a Tough Talk session with Zest Skin Spa’s Louise Caithness.
What to expect from our PB Upskills series (February 1–5):
Monday 1 February – 10am – Digital Skills Live with Keeks Reid (part one) – “How the biggest social media platforms can work for your salon business”
If you want to use social media platform Pinterest but don’t know where to start, or you’ve lost your mojo with Twitter, then digital and social content specialist Keeks Reid will talk you through ways you can utilise the biggest long-standing social media platforms for your salon business. There will be a 10-minute audience Q&A at the end where you can ask Reid your burning questions.

Tuesday 2 February – 12pm – Practical Skills Live with James Harknett – “Top tanning tricks for spray tanners”
Celebrity tanner based at the W Hotel in London, James Harknett, will reveal how you can make it in the beauty industry as a successful spray tanner, revealing his top tips for achieving a flawless glow on every client, and covering the common mistakes tanners make and how to avoid them. Harknett will also be sharing his key to success, touching on important lessons he’s learned during his amazing career trajectory. There will be a 10-minute audience Q&A at the end where you can ask Harknett your burning tanning questions.

Tuesday 2 February – 1pm – Tough Talk – “Live with Louise Caithness”
Want to know how industry titans got to the top? In this Tough Talk session, Professional Beauty managing director Mark Moloney asks Louise Caithness, managing director of Zest Skin Spa, about her personal backstory, the secrets behind her success, what qualities you need to make is as an entrepreneur, the mistakes she has made along the way and how her business is surviving the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wednesday 3 February – Top Tips article – “[Updated]: 8 challenges techs face when doing lash extensions and lifts”
With the lash industry going from strength-to-strength, in this PB Upskills top tips article we troubleshoot eight of the biggest issues techs face when doing lash extensions and lash lifts, covering extensions sticking together, the shakes, roaming eyes, temperature trouble, eye irritation and more. We also reveal how to not undersell your prices when you reopen post-Covid-19 lockdown.

Thursday 4 February – 12:30pm – Business Skills Live with Valerie Delforge (part one) – “The five mistakes that lose salons money (and how to fix them)”
When it comes to budget, it's important to know your numbers, but it goes beyond that as every detail matters to reduce costs and increase profits. With margins becoming smaller and many costs increasing, it's important to analyse your business like never before. With 30 years in the spa and salon industry – having managed large and small operations, Valerie Delforge, founder and chief executive of The Delforge Group, will outline the five mistakes that lose salons money and how to fix them, with some key takeaways you can apply in your business straight away.

Friday 5 February – Lockdown Lessons article – “In conversation with… Finlay Anderson, InterContinental Hotels Group’s area and spa leisure director for UK North”
Finlay Anderson has been appointed the InterContinental Hotels Group’s (IHG) first area spa and leisure director for UK North, with the goal of streamlining protocols to turn the company’s eight northern spa sites, including The Spa at Blythswood Square and Kimpton Charlotte Square Hotel, into profitable wellness experiences. Anderson reveals how he’s achieving this during the coronavirus pandemic.
