PB Upskills (Jan 25–29): acrylic nails advice and kickstarting your business post-Covid-19 lockdown

Our PB Upskills programme for January 25–29 promises an array of education to help you develop your skills and prep your beauty business for reopening post-coronavirus lockdown.
We have experts who will explain how to make your salon website a success, tips for kickstarting your beauty business when lockdown 3.0 ends and advice on where to find the right mentoring advice.
We also have a 3D acrylic nail art demo happening, a frank chat with session tech Marian Newman on the industry’s future, and an all you need to know acrylic nails troubleshooting guide.
What to expect from our PB Upskills series (January 25–29):
Monday 25 January – 10am – Digital Skills Live with Kate Woods (part three) – “Building a successful salon website”
Kate Woods of digital hair and beauty marketing specialist Salondipity will explore how to build a successful salon website in our third Digital Skills masterclass with her. In this session Woods will cover: why you still need a website, the importance of SEO, the pages every salon website should have, whether you should or should not include your prices online, and the importance of images. Woods will also explain whether you can build your own salon website or whether you should hire someone for the job, and will touch on any digital grants that may be available to small businesses.

Tuesday 26 January – 12pm – Practical Skills Live with Kirsty Meakin – “Nail demo: 3D acrylic flower”
Award-winning nail tech Kirsty Meakin is going to be doing a live nail art demo as part of PB’s Practical Skills series.Meakin will demonstrate the art of gel-polish nail art and the fundamentals of 3D acrylic nail art by creating a beautiful 3D acrylic flower, and will discuss the common troubleshooting issues you could face when doing this. There will be a 10-minute audience Q&A at the end where you can ask Meakin your burning questions.

Tuesday 26 January – 1pm – Tough Talk – “Live with Marian Newman”
In our second Tough Talk session, Professional Beauty and Hairdressers’ Journal managing director Mark Moloney asks session tech, educator and author Marian Newman how she got to the top of the industry and what she has learned from her varied experiences. Newman will reveal her business learnings, give advice on how to progress in the beauty industry and explain how to aspire to do great things.

Wednesday 27 January – Top Tips – “Your ultimate acrylic nails troubleshooting guide”
In this written article, we ask the nail industry’s elite techs to answer your burning acrylic nails troubleshooting questions. Hot topics in the piece include: getting your arch placement every time, nailing your liquid-to-powder ratio, filling in regrowth, external factors that could affect the outcome of sets, the best tools to use, and why it’s dangerous to use gel-polish mixed into acrylic liquid in order to have different acrylic colours.

Thursday 28 January – 12:30pm – Business Skills Live with Liz McKeon (part three) – “How to kickstart your business and your team”
In our third live session with business consultant Liz McKeon we will explore how you can kickstart your salon business and your team this year to achieve success. McKeon will talk about how to go back to basics with your team following a very disruptive 12 months due to the coronavirus pandemic, covering how you can communicate your business plan effectively to excite your staff and help them move on from the upheaval of 2020. To do this, McKeon will explain why it’s important to revisit your customer service journey, product knowledge, internal sales process, client review and more.

Friday 29 January – Lockdown Lessons – “Liza Smith on coaching and mentoring beauty pros during Covid-19”
In this written article, award-winning salon owner and session tech Liza Smith tells us about her new business coaching initiative, which is offering support and resources to beauty business owners during the Covid-19 pandemic, and why seeking out this type of guidance is so crucial right now. She will also spill the beans on her involvement in the Government’s reopening guidelines for the personal care sector.
