Retinol and Gua Sha named 2022’s biggest beauty trends
Retinol has been named as 2022’s biggest beauty trend, with over 9.2 million Google searches, and 1.2 billion views on TikTok.
The research, by retail discount site Hey Discount, found the ingredient to be the most popular trend this year, based on TikTok views, Google searches and it’s 635,767 Instagram hashtags.
Retinol isn’t the only ingredient to make the list, with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide also making the top ten, amassing 6.84 and 6.4 million Google searches respectively.
The Euphoria effect is well and truly here to stay, with graphic eyeliner gaining one billion views on TikTok, and the hashtag being used 655,325 times on Instagram, making the statement eye make-up the second biggest beauty trend this year.
Wellness tools are continuing to trend, as searches for #GuaSha on TikTok total 976.9 million views, with 502,093 Instagram posts using the same tag. The tools, sometimes known as “scraping” therapy, have been utilised and promoted by beauty therapists for years thanks to their ability to sculpt the face.

In addition to the biggest beauty trends, the research revealed the highest earning beauty influencers, with YouTube beauty guru James Charles claiming the top spot.
According to the data, a single post to the influencer’s 22.9 million Instagram followers could cost around £61,000.
Syrian influence Narins Beauty, who has 8.7 million Instagram followers, could charge just under £25,000 per post, and Miami-based blogger Sandra Cires, who has over 16 million YouTube subscribers and 3.4 million followers on Instagram, could charge over £7,000 for a sponsored video on her TikTok account, which has almost 3 million followers.
