Two thirds of mums are considering starting a business from home in next three years
65% of mums with children under 10 are tempted to start a business from home in the next three years, reveals a study by Direct Line for Business.
One in five (20%) cited spending more time with children as the main reason, with 16% considering the idea because of prohibitive childcare costs associated with working a nine-to-five job.
Recent figures put full-time annual childcare costs at £11,702 for two children in the UK. Almost half surveyed said they would be better of financially if they started a business from home. With 14% saying they are motivated by the flexibility of being their own boss and 12% saying they have always had ambitions to start their own business.
New mums’ setting up beauty businesses or becoming mobile therapists are already prevalent in the beauty industry because of the flexible working hours.
This could also be behind the spate of new businesses which launched late last year including London-based beauty venture Prettly, which provide at-home beauty treatments created by Farrah Hamid, and Myshowcase, a retail initiative set up by Hangbag.com founder Nancy Cruickshank and Telegraph Magazine beauty columnist Kate Shapland, which allows women to sell luxury beauty products through group events and receive commission.
See the May issue of Professional Beauty magazine for more details on Myshowcase.
