Winners announced for Student Make-up Honours Competition

On June 10, Airbrush company Mistair and HD make-up and skincare range Stageline Professional held the live final of their inaugural Student Make-up Honours Competition, open to Level 2 and 3 make-up students from beauty education institutes across the UK.

The successful students from the first stage of the competition – the design submission heat – were invited to compete in the live final at North Warwicksire and Hinckley College’s Nuneaton campus.  The Level 2 finalists were asked to create a catwalk look on the theme ‘cultural fusion’, complete with hair or wigs, in 1 hour 30 minutes; while the Level 3 students’ task was to create a torso, face, neck and head design complete with costume from the same theme, in 4 hours.

Professional make-up artist Jan Maier judged the competition, along with Amy Long and Olly Fisk from Mistair and Stageline Professional. Students were judged on area set up, professionalism, presentation, application techniques, dramatic impact and overall finished effect.

Rekha PadanThe Level 2 winner was Rekha Padan from City College Coventry, whose final look represented an English bride with Asian cultural twists. Maier said: “Rekha’s make-up was fabulous. Her design for a bridal look inspired by the ‘east meets west’ theme was outstanding and clearly reflected cultural fusion.”

Evlynn BakewellThe level 3 winner was Evlynn Bakewell from North Warwickshire and Hinckley College, who was inspired by Greek Mythology for her look.  “Evlynn did an excellent job and was extremely professional throughout. Her make-up incorporated a lot of different techniques and demonstrated the brilliant combination of different ancient Greek themes,” commented Maier.

Both winners received a prize package including a mentor experience, £500 to spend on Mistair and Stageline Professional products and a bespoke training course package worth £300.
