The biggest business lessons of the year: salon leaders share what really drove growth

Updated on 22nd Dec 2025

The end of a year is always a popular time for reflection, so with that in mind, we asked three business leaders to share the biggest lessons they learnt this year

Francesca Boynes-Butler, salon manager at The Hyde

“This year as a salon manager I’ve learned so much – but the biggest lesson has been the true value of your team. They are the heartbeat of the salon. Clients come back for them, they build the relationships and inspire trust and loyalty. That’s why investing in my team has become my top priority.

“I’ve made it a point to take them out for coffee for regular 1-to-1s, giving us space away from the salon to reflect on their progress, talk about where they want to grow, and explore new skills they’d like to develop. I want them to feel supported, encouraged, and confident in their own journey as therapists.

“I’ve also learned the importance of feedback – not only from clients, which is of course incredibly valuable, but also from the team. Keeping a pulse check on how things are running for them, listening to their ideas, and taking their input on board has been essential in creating a positive, happy working environment.

“Getting to know them on a deeper level has helped build an open, honest atmosphere where communication feels natural. It means we can identify any worries early and work through challenges together. My team this year has been incredible – they truly make my job what it is, and I’m so grateful for each one of them.”

Abbie Denton, salon manager at Beauty and Bubbles

“This year has been one of meaningful growth for our small beauty salon, proudly established 13 years ago. We've learnt the importance of truly personalised service, taking time to understand each client's individual needs and tailoring their experience to suit these.

“To stay current and on trend, we continued investing in training and introduced more advanced treatments in line with our developing industry. A key milestone was adopting AI assisted tools to enhance our treatment descriptions, helping clients make clearer, more confident choices. We also streamlined our operations with improved booking and communication systems.

“Most importantly, we've seen how consistency, care and authenticity build lasting relationships - strengthening our salon as we move into the year ahead.”

Jamie-Lee Jones, salon director at B-Unique Beauty and Aesthetics

“This year I’ve learnt that growth doesn’t always come from finding new clients, but from valuing the ones you already have.

“By focusing on retention, consistency, and the client experience, our salon has seen stronger results than ever. When you look after your existing clients properly, they become your biggest advocates.

“It’s reminded me that loyalty builds longevity as you don’t need to constantly chase new clients to grow a successful, sustainable business.”

B-unique Beauty and Aesthetics, Beauty and Bubbles and The Hyde are all finalists in not one, but two categories at the Professional Beauty Awards 2026. If you'd like to be a part of celebrating the best of the beauty industry, why not book your ticket today?
