93% of Brits think men should not wear makeup

Men should not wear makeup, according to 93% of British men and women. The findings emerged in a study carried out by market researcher Canadean.

According to the data, only 7% of UK men and 5% of women, think men should wear makeup for decorative purposes, including products such as blusher and mascara.

Veronika Zhupanova, analyst at Canadean said: “Male make-up still remains niche and is frowned upon not only by men, but also by women.”

The male makeup market in the UK is primarily driven by the desire to disguise imperfections. A higher percentage, 14% of women and 12% of men, condone male makeup used for this purpose. This includes applying makeup to hide acne or mask the signs of ageing.

The primary motivator in the male makeup market is a more youthful appearance, with 24% of makeup sales by volume driven by a wish to look younger.

Zhupanova said the stigma still attached to men using makeup means that “men look for products that provide natural-looking results that can be applied in the morning before going to work and last all day without smudging, so they don’t risk being exposed".
