A December opening date has been announced for the new Abbey Leisure Centre in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

The £13m leisure centre, which replaces the old Abbey Sports Centre and Goresbrook Leisure Centre, will feature a spa, a 25 metre swimming pool, a learner pool, a gym with 140 workout stations and three studios used for a range of activities, including fitness – among other facilities.

The spa will have a 100sq m thermal area, designed by sauna and heat experiences specialists Dalesauna, which will feature a sauna, an aromatherapy steam room, a crystal steam room and a salt inhalation room. Other facilities in the thermal suites will include an ice feature, two experience showers and a hydrotherapy pool with massage jets.

Dean Edwards, sales manager at Dalesauna, said: “Having such an enlightened client as Barking and Dagenham Council has allowed us to create a thermal suite that boasts the same quality of design, facilities and finishes that you would expect to find in five star hotel or destination spa.

"The council has been very innovative in their choice of facilities, ensuring that the new spa will act as a great additional revenue stream, and also attract people who may not have considered using a local authority centre previously. It will be a great facility for local residents."

The new leisure centre is being designed by AFLS+P Architects, and constructed by contractors Willmott Dixon.
