The Government has announced a national minimum wage increase of 12p an hour to £6.31 for adults from October, which could significantly impact small businesses such as salons.
National minimum wage (NMW) will also rise by 5p to £5.03 for 18-to-20-year-olds and the minimum rate for apprentices will rise by 3p to £2.68 an hour.
The increases are below current inflation levels and most employers have welcomed the restraint of the Government in not implementing larger rises yet. The increase of 1.9% in NMW for adults is well below inflation, which currently stands at about 2.8%.
