Cosmetics safety standards raised with new EU legislation

New EU legislation requires cosmetics companies to include contact information for the persons responsible for ensuring “product compliance and maintaining up to date safety assessments” on the label of each product. Coming into force on July 11, the Cosmetics Regulation is designed to raise cosmetics safety and advertising standards across the European Union.

The person or persons responsible for ensuring health and safety product compliance must also keep a “product information file accessible to public authorities,” according to the new legislation, passed by the European Commission. All cosmetics will have to be summited to a centralised electronic notification system for safety evaluation. A spokesperson for the European Commission commented that the legislation is set to streamline product safety standards across the European Union, removing “any ambiguities that may occur among the member states.”
