Prestige facial skincare booming in the UK
Sales of prestige facial skincare products in the UK are defying the recession, increasing by 9% between 2011 and 2012, according to new data from market analyst group Mintel, and is now valued at £449million (US$689m). Charlotte Libby, household and personal care analyst at Mintel, said of the figures: “Prestige products have benefited from the so called lipstick effect, which has seen sales of luxury beauty products remain strong despite the economic downturn, as consumers treat themselves to small items.”
The facial skincare market as a whole has grown by 20% in the last five years and was valued at £1.1billion (US$1.7bn) in 2012, a figure that is expected to rise to £1.2bn (US$1.8bn) by 2017. Men’s facial skincare products are also seeing strong sales, increasing by 3.6% between 2011 and 2012 and now valued at £58m (US$89m). 7% of men say they spend a considerable amount of time on their skincare regime, with 42% regularly using moisturisers, 23% applying lip balm, 22% using a facial cleanser and 16% incorporating facial wipes into their skincare regime.
