I realise I’m probably not star pupil material when I arrive at check-in for the no-caffeine, no-dairy, no-sugar Grayshott Health regime clutching what remains of my Costa cappuccino (with sugar). However, as someone for whom the word addicted can only really begin to describe my relationship with sugar and caffeine, I can’t resist the temptation to seize every last ounce of both while I still can – even if I am only here for a two-day programme taster. Had I signed up for the full seven-day regime, as the other 11 Grayshott Health participant this week have, I would have been advised to gradually cut down my intake of caffeine, refined sugar and alcohol, also banned on the programme, over a course of three weeks prior to arrival – in order to prevent severe withdrawal symptoms.
