Rosewood hotel to open in former US embassy in London

Rosewood Hotels & Resorts has announced the opening of a second property in London, in what is currently the American embassy.

The hotel, which will be the second Rosewood property in the city following the opening of Rosewood London in Holborn in 2013, will comprise 137 rooms and suites.

Rosewood will manage the luxury hotel, located on London’s prestigious Grosvenor Square in Mayfair, on behalf of Qatari real investment company Qatari Diar.

Hotel features will include a high-end spa, five restaurants, six different retail outlets, and a ballroom with space for up to 1,000 guests, among other amenities.

Sonia Cheng, chief executive of the Rosewood Hotel Group, said: “We are thrilled to embark on this exciting new venture, which will bring new life to this iconic building.

“The prestigious Mayfair neighbourhood embodies elegance, culture, and sophistication, making it the ideal location for Rosewood’s second property in London.

Celebrated British architect Sir David Chipperfield has been commissioned to oversee the redesign of the building, which has a Grade-II listed façade.

Sheikh Jassim Al-Thani, chief development officer of Qatari Diar, Europe and Americas, said:

“This is a major opportunity for London and a hotel of this exceptional calibre perfectly aligns with our vision and ambition to renew the heart of Mayfair and cement the neighbourhood’s unique character as the leading hospitality, arts and luxury retail quarter in London”

The hotel, on which construction will begin later this year, will be Rosewood’s sixth property in Europe. Other hotels in Europe include Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco in Tuscany, Italy, and Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel in Paris, France.

Globally, Rosewood manages 20 luxury properties in 11 countries, with 15 new hotels currently under development. These include the Rosewood Edinburgh and Rosewood Vienna, scheduled to open in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
