UK beauty sector set for 18% growth in the next five years

The UK beauty and personal care market is expected to grow by 18% between 2012 and 2017, according to global market researcher Mintel’s annual British Lifestyle report.

The biggest increase is predicted for shampoos and conditioners, expected to grow by 25% and 26% respectively.

Currently valued at £10.6bn, Britain’s personal care sector saw a 16% growth between 2007 and 2012. The findings of the British Lifestyle report confirms the existence of the so-called lipstick effect, the theory that splashing out on beauty products becomes an affordable way for consumers to cheer themselves up in tough economic times.

Overall consumer spend in the UK, across all categories, is expected to rise by 17% between 2012 and 2017, to £1.7trillion.
