There is no reason why successful wellbeing concepts should be the exclusive reserve of secluded rural retreats. Andrew Gibson, group director of spa at the Mandarin Oriental, advises urban hotels on how they can capitalise on the wellbeing trend.

The primary concern for any hotel is achieving the highest possible room occupancy and other services, such as food and beverage, fitness facilities and spa treatments, are designed to support this objective.

However, research at the Mandarin Oriental has repeatedly demonstrated that guests who spend in the spa are likely to spend more than double on food and beverage compared to guests who do not use the spa.

These guests are likely to stay almost one day longer and pay a signifi cant premium by either upgrading their room or paying closer to rack rate.
