The menopause can have damaging impacts on the skin, such as dryness, irritation, spots and increased sensitivity, and it's something that has to be talked about by therapists to ensure the best method of treatment for clients.

We sat down with celebrity facialist and multiple-salon owner Teresa Tarmey to discuss how to effectively tackle menopausal skin in salon.

Symptoms to look out for in clients

"Hormonal changes can do lots of different things," says Tarmey, before breaking down the three most common symptoms you may see in clients struggling with the change:

- Hot flushes

- Mood swings

- Collagen reduction

"It's a fact that the collagen reduces and declines as we get older, particularly when we get to menopause," explains Tarmey.

Being sensitive to a client's frame of mind is also essential, Tarmey suggests. "It's really down to the individual. Some people might just be moody [on the] da, which has no impact on the skin. but definitely [don't] shy away from treatments."

Contraindications

Although treatments on menopausal skin are often fine to go ahead with, certain precuations should be taken.

"For those suffering with hot flushes, think about not wrapping them up too much, and heat treatments might be a little sensitive for them," says Tarmey.

Although menopause can be experienced at any age, Tarmey suggests those around the common age of 51 could consider further care. "You might be looking at more advaced treatments like radiofrequency or things that are good for skin tightening. Definitely don't shy away from those kind of things."
