More than half (51%) of women wear lipstick to feel better about themselves, according to new research conducted by Beauty Boulevard, the creator of Glitter Lips, in aid of National Lipstick Day (Saturday, July 29).

35% claimed wearing their favourite shade put them in a cheerier mood, with 20% wearing it daily and 30% applying it three times a week, the report found.

Only 1% of respondents wear lipstick less than once a year.

UK consumers love of lip colour shows no signs of slowing down with one fifth of respondents admitting they own more than 11 tubes of lipstick, and long-lasting colour came out as the most popular feature most look for in the product.

Trends are playing a big part in the growth of the sector too, with 90% stating they would wear glittery lipstick and 16% having already sported the look, the research showed.

Despite more than half being happy with the shape of their own lips, respondents were asked which celebrities had the most enviable pouts, with actress Angelina Jolie coming out top (13.5%), followed by reality star Kylie Jenner (7.7%) and model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (6.6%).

Made in Chelsea star Millie Mackintosh had the least desirable lips with just 1.4% of the vote, the survey found.

“Lipstick plays an important part in many women’s lives and the evidence shows in our research, with 51% stating they wear it to feel better about themselves,” said Paula Short, co-founder of Beauty Boulevard.

Research was based on the responses of 1,000 women aged 18–45 across the UK. Beauty Boulevard will be launching even more lip colours, including Colour Stay Lip Liners, Lip Liquids and Lip Serums.
