"Micro Makeovers" are set to trend in 2023
Pinterest's annual Pinterest Predicts report for 2023 is here, with the "personal media" brand providing a window to look at 27 trends across 11 categories set to take off in the new year.
In the beauty world, Pinterest is expecitng the "Micro Makeover" to increase in popularity, as well as "Crown Care" as scalp health becomes a priority, and "Gemini Hair", which will see natural hues mixed with bright and bold shades.
What is a "Micro Makeover"?
In the report, Pinterest describes the "Micro Makeover" as "beauty going small", predicting that millenials and Gen Z will favour short French manicures, natural nails and bob haircuts over acrylic creations and long locks.
The brand's global search data from September 2020-2022 revealed that searches for "micro french nails" have increased by 235%, as well as searches for "short stiletto nails" rising by 80%.
Speaking on the trend, Pinterest UK's head of beauty Tom Spratt says, "Next year’s top beauty looks will take things back to the basics. People are ready for a reset, and nothing says new beginnings like a fresh trim and new nails.
"As we move away from maximalism, think micro bangs, chopped haircuts and short stiletto nails."
The trend's minimalist focus may well be an extension of the rise in popularity of the "Clean Girl Aesthetic" seen earlier this year.
For those wishing to step away from acrylic nails this year, builder gel offers a great alternative to help grow and strengthen natural nails.
Vitamin seaweed
Superfoods from the sea are one of the three trends predicted in the Food and Beverage category, as ocean-based foods and minerals are becoming a firm favourite among millenials and Gen X. The beauty industry has seen a steady rise in awareness surrounding and use of ingredients such as sea moss, a type of algae which has a host of benefits including helping with gut health and fertility issues, as well as protecting the skin barrier and balancing oil production.
Wellbeing trends for 2023
When it comes to wellbeing and mental health, Pinterest predicts alternatives to talk therapy, such as expressive art, music therapy and journaling, will become popular with Gen Z and millenials as they seek creative ways to work on themselves.
Screens will also be put down for stretches and anti-tech workouts are set to become increasingly popular as Gen X and millenials prioritise posture.
Crossover trends
Aside from the three beauty trends Pinterest names, a number of trends in other categories could feed into beauty, such as the prediction that "Rave Culture" will be returning in a big way, and "Sci-fi Fits" expected to rise in popularity as Gen Z and millennials opt for futuristic fits. Expect to see rave-inspired make-up looks and futuristic nail sets from those sticking with longer lengths.
