Report that phthalates cause low IQ should not worry Brits

The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA) has said UK consumers have nothing to worry about, after recent claims that phthalates can cause a lower IQ in children exposed to them while in the womb.

A study published by scientists at Columbia University in New York has claimed there is a link between pregnant women exposed to two phthalates, which are chemical ingredients found in some make-up, as well as various food and household products, and the IQ of their children.

The study, which tested the children of New York mothers who had been exposed to four different phthalates, found that those whose mothers were exposed to the highest levels di-isobutyl phthalate (DiPB) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DnPB) during pregnancy had IQ scores that were 7.6 and 6.6 points lower those whose mothers were only exposed to low concentrations.

However, the CTPA has refuted the link, and says that consumers have nothing to worry about. “While the study is of scientific interest,” the CTPA said, “it is important to note that these two ingredients are banned from use in cosmetic products in Europe.”
